Track grip in F1, explained

Why a circuit that feels undriveable on Friday morning turns into a grip-fest by Sunday afternoon, and who does the work in between.

Ask a driver what a brand new street circuit feels like on Thursday night and you'll get some version of the same answer: sketchy. Not because the layout is wrong, but because the tarmac underneath the tyres hasn't earned its grip yet. Las Vegas found this out the hard way in its debut year. With no support race running on the Strip overnight, and public traffic reopening the roads until the small hours, the surface was effectively wiped clean before every single F1 session, so drivers were relearning the grip level from a standing start each time they rolled out of the garage. That's track evolution in a sentence: grip isn't a fixed property of the asphalt, it's something the cars build.

What a 'green' track actually means

A track surface is at its lowest grip the moment it opens for a session, before anyone has driven on it. Engineers and drivers call this a green track. As cars lap, their tyres shed microscopic amounts of rubber onto the tarmac, and that rubber concentrates in the areas where the tyre works hardest: heavy braking zones and the apex of a corner. The deposited layer fills the tiny voids in the road surface, which improves how the tyre grips rather than skids over it. It's the same mechanism whether it's a Formula 1 car or the categories running before it, and it's why track evolution is most pronounced during dry weekends, with early green-track sessions running slower and lap times improving as the rubber builds. By the time qualifying arrives, the racing line has visibly darkened against the rest of the track, a physical record of where the rubber has gone down.

This matters to a fan for a simple reason: it explains why FP1 times mean almost nothing, why nobody wants to be first out on a green track, and why the surface a driver races on Sunday afternoon is not the surface anyone tested on Friday morning. Strategy calls, tyre choices and even braking points are all built on an assumption about how much more grip is still coming.

Why the FIA treats grip as something you earn, not something you apply

This is also, tellingly, one of the few places where the mechanics of grip show up directly in the rulebook. The Sporting Regulations state plainly that competitors are not permitted to attempt to alter the grip of any part of the track surface other than by driving on it. In other words, laying down rubber through racing is legal and expected; anything more deliberate is not. The same principle shows up again in the pit lane rules, where teams are barred from trying to enhance grip at their pit stop box by laying tyre rubber deliberately, unless a genuine problem has been identified and the Race Director has signed off on a fix. Grip, by design, is something the cars generate collectively over a weekend, not something a team can manufacture for itself.

The regulations also give the Race Director a formal tool for genuinely low-grip situations, distinct from the normal Friday-to-Sunday build. When conditions are damp, drying or otherwise compromised, the Race Director can declare Low Grip Conditions, a status that carries real consequences: full DRS activation can be restricted to partial activation only, and higher-power ERS deployment modes are dialled back while the declaration stands. Normal Grip Conditions can only be reinstated with more than five minutes left in a qualifying period, which is why you sometimes hear commentators note that DRS or Overtake use has been pared back even on a technically dry track; the surface hasn't yet been judged safe enough to hand back full performance.

Why support races and resurfacing change the story

Grip doesn't arrive from nowhere, and how much of it exists before F1 even turns a wheel depends heavily on what else has used the circuit. Support races such as Formula 2 and the Porsche Supercup running on the same track between F1 sessions are doing real work here, every lap they turn is another lap's worth of rubber going down before the main event even starts. That's exactly why organisers now schedule extra non-championship running ahead of a race weekend where they can: get enough cars circulating early and the surface arrives at FP1 with a head start instead of starting from zero. A venue with a packed support bill arrives at FP1 already partway up the grip curve; a venue without one starts from scratch every single session.

That gap is exactly what caught Vegas out. A resurfaced or brand new circuit compounds the problem further. Drivers have pointed to Jeddah as the standard other new venues struggle to match, and Miami's first year became the counter-example: the fresh asphalt was so short of rubber that most of the track width simply wasn't worth using, drivers were funnelled onto a single narrow strip of grip while the rest of the tarmac sat there doing nothing for them. Istanbul Park's 2020 resurfacing produced a similar story on a permanent circuit, when the brand new tarmac offered so little purchase in dry practice that drivers were managing the car like it was on a skating rink, and even qualifying and the race itself, run in the wet, never really escaped that same skittish, low-grip feeling. Temporary street venues face this problem hardest of all; without years of accumulated racing history baked into the tarmac, grip can swing wildly from one session to the next at these circuits, which is exactly why teams often push for extra track time when a calendar adds somewhere new.

Rain resets the clock regardless of how much history a circuit has. A shower doesn't just make the track wet, it washes away the rubber layer built up over the weekend, so the surface reverts toward green even once it dries. That's why a rain-hit Saturday can leave Sunday's race feeling like a second Friday, with drivers cautiously rebuilding grip lap by lap rather than picking up where qualifying left off.

Where you'll notice it

Watch for it at any brand new or freshly resurfaced circuit, where the first sessions produce a wave of locked brakes and drivers running wide at corners that will look routine by Sunday. Watch for it on sprint weekends too, where a single practice session means qualifying happens on a track that has had far less time to rubber in than a conventional weekend allows. And watch for it whenever rain interrupts a dry weekend; the on-board footage of a driver picking a cautious, wandering line after a shower is track evolution being undone in real time.

Once you're looking for it, track grip explains a lot of what looks like inconsistency on a race weekend: the driver who complains about a lack of grip in FP1 and then sets a scorching lap in Q3, the team that holds a car back from an early support-race-style installation lap, the sudden caution around a resurfaced corner. None of it is mysterious once you know the surface itself has been quietly improving under every car that's touched it. Next time a new venue joins the calendar, the story to watch isn't just the layout, it's how thin or thick the support bill is beforehand, because that's what decides whether Friday feels like ice or already feels like a race track.
