What 'classified' means in F1 results, explained
A car can be smoking at the side of the track and still count as a finisher, if it went far enough first.

On the broadcast that looks like a straightforward non-finish. On the timing sheet, that driver might still be sitting in eighth place with points next to their name. The car didn't cross the line, but the result says otherwise.
The line that decides who counts
The rule that makes this possible is F1's classification threshold, commonly shorthanded as the 90% rule. Under it, any driver who completes at least 90% of the scheduled race distance is considered a classified finisher. That figure is based on laps completed rather than time, and where the percentage doesn't land on a whole number the required lap count is rounded to the nearest complete lap. Cross that line, even from the cool-down room in your race suit rather than the cockpit, and you're in the official result. Fall short of it and you simply aren't, whatever position you were running in when the car stopped.
Why does a fan need to know this? Because only classified drivers are eligible to score points. A driver's championship battle can hinge on whether a late mechanical failure happened on the right side of that 90% mark or the wrong one. It's the kind of rule nobody thinks about until the one Sunday it decides a top-ten finish, and then suddenly every fan in the grandstand is doing lap-count arithmetic on their phone.
The maths behind the threshold
The mechanism itself is straightforward once you picture a full-length race. Take a 55-lap event: knock ten percent off that and you land just shy of 50 laps, and that's the line a struggling car needs to reach before its race counts as finished, whatever happens next. Miss that mark, whether by crashing out with more than half the race still to run or by nursing a dying power unit home two laps down, and the result sheet treats you as if you were never part of the race at all for scoring purposes.
It also explains why the running order among non-finishers isn't arbitrary. A driver who crashes on lap 30 is ranked above one who crashed on lap 15. Distance covered is the currency of the classification, whether a driver reaches the flag or not. That's why a driver can retire with two laps to go and still out-rank someone who parked it on lap one of a race that ran the full distance; more laps completed always beats fewer.
NC and DNF are answering different questions
This is where the acronyms on the results sheet start to matter, and where fans genuinely conflate two things that mean different results. DNF simply means did not finish: the driver was on track and running, then wasn't, because the car broke, crashed, or was pulled into the garage and not sent back out. It describes why the car stopped moving.
NC, not classified, answers a completely different question: how far did the car get before the chequered flag fell, regardless of whether it was still running at that point. Below the 90% threshold, a driver is marked either DNF if they stopped on track, or NC if they reached the flag but still fell short of the winner's distance. That second case is the one that surprises fans most. A car can survive to the very end of the race, engine intact, driver waving to the crowd, and still be NC because it was laps down and never crossed the 90% line. Not every classification failure is a breakdown; sometimes it's simply being too far behind.
The scoring consequence is identical either way. Fall short of that 90% distance and the points column reads zero, full stop, no matter how many laps you actually completed or how healthy the car looked crossing the line. There's no partial credit for effort or distance covered short of the line; you're either classified or you're not, and the points column treats an NC exactly like it treats a DNF. Zero either way.
Where this actually bites
The rule rarely troubles the front of the grid; a car leading or podium-chasing has usually covered well past 90% by the time anything goes wrong. It matters most in the midfield and at the back, in the kind of attritional race where a car has been running lapped or two laps down all afternoon and a late mechanical issue arrives before it's banked enough distance to be saved by the threshold. Time it right and a late failure costs nothing, the points are already banked the moment the car crosses that 90% mark. Time it wrong, even by a single lap, and a points finish that looked nailed on simply evaporates. The gap between those two outcomes can be a single lap, which is why engineers on the pit wall are quietly doing this arithmetic in real time whenever a car starts losing pace or smoking.
The next time a driver limps home well off the pace and the commentary box starts debating whether the result will stand, that's this rule playing out in real time, and it's worth watching the classification column rather than just the finishing order. Attrition-heavy races, especially ones run in extreme heat or with a chaotic safety car sequence, are exactly where the 90% line earns its place in the regulations rather than sitting there as trivia.
