How F1 Pit Stops Work

Twenty mechanics, four tyres, under two seconds. The fastest choreographed act in sport.

A Formula 1 car pulls into the pit lane at 80mph and stops for exactly 2.3 seconds. Twenty mechanics swarm it like ants on a dropped ice cream, and it drives away with four new tyres. How is this even possible?

The pit stop exists because tyres wear out. Think of your car tyres after 30,000 miles — now imagine doing that in 300 miles at 200mph.

F1 tyres are designed to degrade. Soft compounds grip better but wear faster. Hard compounds last longer but provide less grip. Teams must choose when to trade speed for longevity.

When the radio crackles "box box" — pit lane slang for "come in" — the driver has seconds to react. The pit window is open, meaning track conditions favor a stop right now.

Each mechanic has one job. Four wheel gunners. Four wheel removers. Four wheel attachers. One front jack operator. One rear jack operator. Plus extras for emergencies.

The choreography is rehearsed thousands of times. The car arrives, jacks lift it, wheel guns spin at 10,000 RPM, tyres fly off and on, jacks drop, car gone.

The world record is 1.82 seconds. Most pit stops take 2-3 seconds. Anything over 4 seconds and the commentators start analyzing what went wrong.

But speed isn't everything. Strategy matters more.

A driver might pit early with plenty of tyre life left — not because they need new tyres, but because fresher tyres will help them overtake cars that haven't stopped yet.

Or they might stay out longer, hoping other cars will pit first and hand them track position. It's chess at 200mph.

Next time you watch a race, count the mechanics. Watch how the car barely stops moving — it's rolling the entire time, just slower.
