Tyre compounds are different rubber recipes — literally different ingredients mixed together to create different behaviors. Pirelli brings three dry weather compounds to every race weekend.
Soft tyres (marked with red sidewalls) are the grippiest but wear out fastest. Think of them like running shoes with maximum cushioning — amazing for the first few miles, then they fall apart.
Medium tyres (yellow sidewalls) are the compromise — decent grip, decent durability. Most strategy battles happen here.
Hard tyres (white sidewalls) last the longest but provide the least grip. They're like work boots — they'll go the distance but they won't make you fast.
