Why F1 Uses Tyre Blankets (and Might Stop)

Electric blankets that heat tyres to 70°C before they hit the track — and the push to ban them.

You've seen them in the garage — tyres wrapped in electric blankets like patients in a hospital. Why does F1 need to pre-heat rubber to 70°C when your road car works fine with cold tyres?

Cold tyres are dangerous in F1 — and useless. An F1 tyre needs to reach around 100°C to generate maximum grip, but it takes several laps of hard driving to get there naturally.

In those cold laps, drivers have maybe 60% of their normal grip. That's the difference between taking Copse at 280 km/h and taking it at 220 km/h — or not taking it at all.

Tyre blankets solve this by pre-heating tyres to 70°C in the garage. It's not full operating temperature, but it's close enough that drivers get usable grip from lap one.

The physics is about molecular movement. Cold rubber is stiff — the polymer chains don't move freely, so they can't conform to track surface irregularities. Heat makes rubber flexible and sticky.

F1's ultra-soft compounds amplify this effect. They're designed to work at high temperatures, which makes them even more useless when cold than a normal road tyre.

Without tyre warmers, every stint would start with 2-3 laps of careful driving while tyres came up to temperature. That's 2-3 laps of vulnerability.

But F1 wants to ban them by 2025. Why? Cost — teams spend millions on sophisticated heating systems. Environmental impact — each set of blankets uses 3kW of power. And artificial performance — warming tyres artificially removes a skill element from the sport.

The challenge is safety. Without pre-heating, out-laps from the pits become treacherous. Qualifying becomes about who can get temperature into their tyres fastest, not who can drive fastest on optimal tyres.

Pirelli is developing compounds that work better from cold, but it's a difficult balance.

Watch for tyre temperature effects during safety car periods. Even with blankets, tyres cool down under the safety car — that's why drivers weave aggressively, trying to generate heat through the sidewalls.

After a long safety car, the restart often sees drivers sliding wide or locking up. Their tyres have dropped from 100°C operating temperature back toward that dangerous 70-80°C range where grip disappears without warning.
