You're watching a race when suddenly the commentators are shouting about a driver going "beyond track limits." But what are those limits, and why does crossing a white line cause such drama?

Track limits are the boundaries of the racing surface — marked by white lines painted along the edges of the track. Think of them like the sidelines in football: you're either in bounds or you're not.

Stay inside those white lines and you're racing legally. Cross them and you're gaining an unfair advantage by using more track than everyone else gets to use.

Why do these boundaries matter? Because taking a wider line through a corner lets you carry more speed. It's like cutting across the grass on a curved sidewalk instead of following the path.

If everyone could use as much track as they wanted, the actual track design would be meaningless. The challenge is finding the fastest line within the legal boundaries.

When drivers cross track limits, stewards have options. In practice and qualifying, lap times get deleted — that fast lap simply doesn't count. During races, drivers might get warnings, time penalties, or even black and white flags (the "you're on thin ice" flag).

Some corners are monitored more strictly than others, usually where going wide gives the biggest advantage.
