What Is F1 Telemetry?

The 300+ sensors on every car that tell teams everything — speed, throttle, brake, even tyre temperature.

Every time a driver touches the throttle, hits the brakes, or turns the wheel, that data flows instantly to the pit wall. But F1's telemetry system captures far more than you'd expect — and teams use it in ways that might surprise you.

An F1 car carries over 300 sensors measuring everything from obvious metrics like speed and throttle position to obscure ones like suspension travel and brake disc temperature. This constant stream of data — transmitted wirelessly at 2Hz during practice and qualifying — creates what engineers call traces.

A speed trace shows exactly how fast the car is going at every point around the lap. A throttle trace reveals when and how aggressively the driver accelerates. Together, these traces create a digital fingerprint of each lap that's far more precise than what stopwatches can capture.

Here's where it gets interesting: teams don't just use telemetry to monitor their own car. They can see basic data from every other car on track — speed, position, sector times — which turns the pit wall into a tactical command center.

When your engineer radios "Hamilton is two-tenths faster in sector one," they're reading that straight from the telemetry feed. When they say "box this lap" just as a rival starts struggling with tyre degradation, they've spotted it in the data before the TV cameras catch it.

The most valuable telemetry often comes from comparing two laps that look identical on paper. If a driver posts the same lap time but the data shows they're braking 10 meters later into Turn 1, that suggests the car has more pace in reserve — or that the driver is overdriving to compensate for a handling problem.

This is why teams can predict performance changes before they show up in lap times. The telemetry reveals the story behind the stopwatch.

Watch for the moments when drivers get specific radio coaching: "You're losing three-tenths in the middle sector, try carrying more speed through Turn 7." That's not a guess — it's an engineer reading the telemetry traces and spotting exactly where time is being lost.
