What Are Team Orders?

When a team tells one driver to let the other past — and why it's the most controversial thing in the sport.

You're watching a race when suddenly the driver in first gets on the radio: "I'm faster than my teammate." Then, inexplicably, the teammate moves aside and lets him through. What just happened?

That was team orders — when the team tells their drivers who should be where on track. It's racing's most awkward family dinner, broadcast live to millions.

Unlike other sports, F1 teams have two players trying to win the same game. Sometimes their interests align (beat the other teams). Sometimes they conflict (one driver wants the win the other driver currently has).

When conflict strikes, teams pick sides. They'll designate a number one driver — their main championship contender — and ask the number two driver to play wingman.

This might mean the second driver slows down to create a gap for their teammate's pit stop. Or moves aside to let the faster car through. Or even gives up a certain victory because their teammate needs the points more for the championship.

Why do teams do this? Because they're not just racing for individual glory — they're racing for two championships. The Drivers' Championship goes to the best individual driver. But the Constructors' Championship goes to the best team.

If your drivers are fighting each other instead of the competition, you might lose both championships. Better to have one driver win everything than two drivers win nothing.

Next time you hear "the team has asked you to swap positions," watch both drivers' body language. The one moving aside? They're not happy about it, even when they say they understand. The one benefiting? They know they owe their teammate dinner.

It's strategic, it's necessary, and it feels absolutely terrible. That's why team orders are F1's most controversial tool.
