How F1 Race Strategy Works

You're watching practice and hear "we're looking at a one-stop today" — but the race is 70 laps long and tyres only last 25. How do teams know what race strategy will work before they've even seen how the tyres behave in race conditions?

F1 strategy starts with a simple constraint: you must use two different tyre compounds during the race. This forces at least one pit stop, but teams can choose more.

The fundamental trade-off is time lost in the pits versus time gained on track. A pit stop costs 20-25 seconds including the slow pit lane drive. Fresh tyres might be 2 seconds per lap faster than worn ones — so you need at least 10-12 laps of that pace advantage to break even.

Track position — your place in the running order — changes everything. Leading cars often prefer a one-stop strategy because they control the race from the front. Cars behind might choose a two-stop or even three-stop strategy, accepting the time loss to get fresher tyres and overtaking opportunities.

This is why you'll see midfield teams pit early and often — they're trading track position they don't have for tyre performance they need.

Teams simulate thousands of scenarios before the race using tyre degradation data from practice. They model how each compound behaves over stint length, factor in pit stop time loss, and calculate optimal pit windows.

But strategy evolves during the race. Safety cars bunch up the field and make "free" pit stops possible. Unexpected tyre wear forces Plan B. Weather changes everything. The best strategies adapt.

Next time you hear "we're committed to the two-stop now," watch the lap times. Fresh tyres should deliver immediate pace — if they don't, the strategy isn't working.
