The F1 Power Unit

A 1000hp hybrid engine in four letters: ICE, MGU-K, MGU-H, and ES. Here's how they work together.

You hear commentators talk about "power unit modes" and "energy deployment," but what's actually under an F1 car's hood? It's not just an engine — it's four interconnected systems that harvest, store, and deploy energy in ways that would make a Tesla engineer jealous.

Start with the ICE — the Internal Combustion Engine. This 1.6-litre V6 turbo produces about 750hp, but that's just the beginning.

The MGU-K (Motor Generator Unit - Kinetic) sits on the crankshaft like a massive alternator. Under braking, it harvests kinetic energy and converts it to electricity. Under acceleration, it reverses roles and adds 160hp directly to the wheels.

Think of it as regenerative braking on steroids — except instead of just charging a battery, it's actively making the car faster.

The clever bit is the MGU-H (Motor Generator Unit - Heat), connected to the turbocharger shaft. When the driver lifts off the throttle, exhaust flow drops and the turbo would normally slow down — creating lag when they get back on power.

The MGU-H prevents this by either harvesting energy from the spinning turbo (storing it for later) or using stored energy to keep the turbo spinning. No more turbo lag.

It's like having an electric supercharger that pays for itself.

All this electricity flows through the Energy Store (ES) — essentially a very sophisticated battery that can charge and discharge at incredible rates.

Together, these systems form ERS (Energy Recovery System). The power unit can deploy an extra 160hp for 33 seconds per lap — but teams must choose when. Save it for overtaking? Use it to defend? Deploy it early for track position?

The ICE provides the baseline power, but ERS deployment often decides who wins the straight-line battle.

Now when you watch qualifying, listen for engines that sound different on the overrun — that's the MGU-H harvesting energy. When a car pulls away dramatically on a straight despite similar engine specs, that's optimal ERS deployment.

And when drivers complain about "no power" late in races? They've likely exhausted their energy store and are running on ICE alone — about 160hp down on a fully charged rival.
