Who gets points, how many, and why the fastest lap bonus exists.

You watch drivers fight for position all race, but what exactly are they fighting for? The points system decides who wins the championship — and it's not just about crossing the line first.

Only the top 10 finishers get points in each race. The winner gets 25 points, second place gets 18, third gets 15, then it drops by smaller amounts down to 10th place, which gets 1 point.

There's also a bonus: whoever sets the fastest lap during the race gets an extra point — but only if they finish in the top 10. This rewards pure speed, not just race position.

These points feed into two separate championships running simultaneously. The drivers championship adds up each driver's individual points to crown the season's best driver.

The constructors championship adds up both drivers' points for each team. So Mercedes combines Lewis Hamilton's points with George Russell's points to compete against Ferrari's total from both their drivers.

Why does the gap between 1st and 2nd place (25 vs 18 points) matter so much? Because consistency beats occasional brilliance.

A driver who finishes 2nd in every race beats someone who wins half the races but crashes out of the others. This system rewards both speed and reliability — which is what F1 is really about.

Next time you're watching, check the points gap between championship contenders. If someone is 25 points behind, they need to finish one position higher than their rival in the next race just to gain 7 points.
