Fuel in F1 — Weight, Load, and Lift-and-Coast

Cars start heavy and get lighter. How fuel load shapes lap times and strategy.

You know F1 cars refuel during pit stops — except they don't. They start each race carrying every drop of fuel they'll need, making the car heaviest at lights-out and lightest at the chequered flag.

A full fuel load weighs about 110kg — roughly equivalent to carrying a second driver. That's why pole position lap times are typically 3-4 seconds slower than qualifying: the car is hauling an extra 110kg around the track.

This creates the fuel effect — every 10kg of fuel costs roughly 0.3-0.4 seconds per lap. As fuel burns off during the race, lap times naturally drop even without any setup changes or tyre degradation.

Teams exploit this weight reduction through fuel saving — deliberately using less fuel early in the race to extend the car's competitive window later. The most visible technique is lift and coast, where drivers lift off the throttle before braking zones, coasting to the corner on momentum alone.

This can save 10-15% fuel consumption while losing only 0.1-0.2 seconds per lap — a trade that often pays off when the car becomes lighter and more competitive in the final stint.

Watch for drivers lifting early on long straights or coasting through fast corners — especially when they're managing a gap to the car behind. The radio calls "save fuel, save fuel" aren't just about making it to the finish — they're about timing peak performance for when it matters most.

When a driver suddenly finds pace in the final third of the race, it's often not just fresher tyres. It's 40kg less fuel unlocking the car's true potential.
