What Are Blue Flags?

The flag that tells slower cars to get out of the way — and the drama when they don't.

You've seen drivers weaving frantically as a faster car approaches from behind, then pulling aside at the last second. That's a blue flag in action — F1's most urgent "get out of the way" signal.

Blue flags exist because F1 races have a cruel mathematical reality: not everyone can keep up.

When the leaders complete a lap faster than the cars at the back, they start "lapping" them. A driver who gets lapped is now a full lap behind — they're literally in the way of cars fighting for position.

The blue flag tells these slower drivers: "A faster car is coming. Let them pass."

Here's where it gets spicy: being lapped isn't optional.

Drivers have three marshal posts (about half a mile) to move aside once they see blue flags. Ignore them too long? Penalty. Block intentionally? Bigger penalty.

But "moving aside" at 200mph isn't simple. The slower driver has to find the right moment — usually on a straight or wide corner — without losing too much time or causing a crash.

This creates genuine drama. Sometimes a lapped driver is fighting their own battle and doesn't want to give up track position. Sometimes they think the faster car should work harder to pass.

The stewards have to decide: was it reasonable racecraft or dangerous obstruction? It's one of F1's most subjective penalties.

Next time you watch a race, look for cars weaving side to side as faster drivers approach. Those aren't random moves — they're drivers buying time to find a safe place to yield.
