Lando Norris Just Won a Sprint Race He Should Have Lost

Norris was six tenths slower than Hamilton in the opening sector — and still finished 14 seconds clear. That's not dominance. That's McLaren hiding a problem.

Lando Norris won the Miami sprint from pole. He led every lap. He crossed the line 21 seconds ahead of Hamilton. And he shouldn't have been anywhere near the front.

The data shows Norris was six tenths slower than Hamilton in Sector 1 on average pace. That's not a margin. That's a chasm.

Let's be clear about what 0.631 seconds means in a 19-lap sprint. That's not a bad corner. That's not a setup compromise. That's a fundamental weakness in the McLaren through the opening complex — Turns 1 through 5, the high-speed sweepers where downforce and front-end stability matter most.

Hamilton, starting P7, was carving through those corners like the Ferrari was on rails. Norris, starting from pole, was hanging on. And yet Norris finished six positions ahead. How?

Because the McLaren clawed it all back in Sector 3. Norris was a tenth faster through the final sector, and crucially, he was only four hundredths down in Sector 2 — the part of the lap that includes the chicane, the back straight, and the braking zones where overtaking actually happens.

In other words, Norris was losing time where it didn't matter and gaining it where it did. But that's a defensive narrative, and it misses the bigger problem: if Hamilton had started anywhere near Norris, this wouldn't have been a race.

Look at the gap trace. Hamilton spent 19 laps faster than Norris where it should have mattered most — the opening sector, where downforce and front-end bite create overtaking opportunities into Turn 11. But he couldn't close. Not because Norris was brilliant in the places that count, but because he started too far back.

Norris won this race on Saturday in qualifying. The sprint itself was a procession dressed up as a McLaren masterclass.

Now point this car toward Montreal, where the first sector includes a wall-lined chicane and two heavy braking zones. Where track position means nothing if you can't hold someone off into Turn 1. Where qualifying on pole doesn't gift you a 20-second win because the race is 70 laps, not 19, and strategy opens the door.

Norris has a problem. The McLaren is visibly slower than the Ferrari in high-speed corners, and Miami let him hide it because Hamilton started P7 and had no one behind him fast enough to apply pressure. Montreal won't be so forgiving.

The consensus will say McLaren are back, that Norris is in the title fight, that this was a statement win. The data says something else: Norris won a sprint race he should have lost, and the only reason he didn't is because the grid order saved him.

Watch the opening lap in Canada. If Norris qualifies pole and someone like Leclerc or Russell starts alongside, that Sector 1 weakness won't stay hidden. And this time, there won't be 21 seconds to hide behind at the finish.
