Lando Norris won the Miami sprint. Lewis Hamilton finished seventh, sixteen seconds behind after nineteen laps. Everyone will tell you the McLaren was just faster.

They're half right. The McLaren was faster in exactly one part of the circuit — and it happened to be the part that mattered most.

In Sector 2, the part of the circuit with the most violent direction changes and the tightest chicane on the calendar, Hamilton was 0.04 seconds slower. Four hundredths. Margin-of-error stuff. In Sector 3, Hamilton was actually faster by a tenth. The Ferrari had pace everywhere except the place where the lap gets decided.

This tells you everything about what Ferrari got wrong in Miami. This wasn't a power deficit. This wasn't tyre degradation. Hamilton's tyres weren't falling off — his degradation rate was basically flat across the stint. Norris wasn't pulling away lap by lap because the Ferrari was cooking its rubber. He was pulling away because every single time Hamilton turned into Turn 1, he lost a quarter of a second before he'd even made it to the hairpin.

The Ferrari couldn't rotate. Miami's Sector 1 is five corners where you need the rear end to pivot, the front to bite, and the car to change direction without hesitation. The McLaren did all three. The Ferrari did none of them. By the time Hamilton got to the back straight — where he could actually use the car's strengths — he was already too far behind to make it matter.

You can't make up six tenths in a nineteen-lap sprint when four of those tenths disappear in the first sector every single time around. Hamilton wasn't slower. His car was set up for the wrong circuit. You could give him Norris's exact racing line and it wouldn't have mattered — the McLaren was built for this track and the Ferrari wasn't.

This race was over by Turn 5 on Lap 1. Norris gapped Hamilton by four seconds in the opening tour and then spent the rest of the afternoon managing the advantage. The gap grew linearly, lap by lap, because the problem wasn't strategy or driver error or bad luck. It was mechanical. The Ferrari couldn't do what the track demanded, so Hamilton spent nineteen laps hemorrhaging time in the exact same five corners.

The consensus will be that McLaren were faster. Fine. But where they were faster matters. And in Miami, they were faster in the only place that counted — before Hamilton even got a chance to fight back.
