Hamilton ran his own race in Miami while Norris won up front — and the gap between them says absolutely nothing about either driver.

Lewis Hamilton was six tenths slower than Lando Norris in Sector 1. He finished 22 seconds behind. And none of it matters, because they were never in the same race.

Norris started on pole. Hamilton started P7. They stayed exactly where they began for nineteen laps, and the only thing we learned is that starting position is destiny in a nineteen-lap sprint.

Look at that gap chart. It starts at minus four seconds — Norris already ahead on the opening lap — and it ends at minus twenty-two. The line slopes gently downward like a hill you forgot you were walking down. There is no moment where Hamilton closes on Norris. There is no moment where Norris has to defend. They are driving completely separate races, separated by clean air and six other cars.

Hamilton's Sector 1 deficit? Completely irrelevant. Norris is running in free air with a McLaren that's built for leading. Hamilton is stuck in traffic, managing tyres, watching Antonelli and Russell squabble ahead of him. Of course Norris is faster through the opening sequence — he's not navigating anyone else's dirty air.

Here's what actually happened: Norris drove a clean race from pole and won. Hamilton started seventh, ran seventh, and finished seventh. Nobody passed him. He passed nobody. His entire sprint was a nineteen-lap parade lap with the occasional track limits violation to keep things interesting.

The telemetry shows Hamilton's tyres degrading at 0.039 seconds per lap while Norris's were somehow improving at minus 0.016 seconds per lap. You know what that tells me? Norris had clean air and could push. Hamilton had traffic and couldn't. This isn't a pace story. It's a grid position story.

This is the fundamental problem with sprint races at circuits where overtaking is nearly impossible. You get one qualifying session, it sets the grid, and then everyone drives in formation for nineteen laps. Of the top ten finishers, eight of them finished within one position of where they started. Piastri gained one spot. Leclerc gained one spot. Everyone else held station.

Hamilton wasn't slow. Norris wasn't particularly heroic. The McLaren is quick, yes — but we already knew that from qualifying, where Norris took pole. The sprint confirmed nothing except that passing is hard and nineteen laps isn't enough time to try.

So when you see the headline that Norris was faster than Hamilton, remember: they never raced. They qualified in different positions and then drove separate races, occasionally glancing at each other through the timing screens.

The Canadian Grand Prix is next. Actual race distance. Actual strategy. Actual opportunities to pass. Maybe then we'll learn something about who's actually faster. Until then, this data proves exactly nothing.
