Hamilton Lost This Race Before Turn 1

Lando Norris crushed Lewis Hamilton in Sector 1 and never looked back — Miami proved Ferrari's straight-line weakness is a qualifying problem, not just a race problem.

Lewis Hamilton started P7, finished P7, and ran a clean race. Lando Norris won from pole. The gap between them was 21 seconds. Nothing happened between them — and that's exactly the problem.

Norris was 0.631 seconds faster through Sector 1. Hamilton clawed back a tenth in Sector 3. He broke even in Sector 2. But by the time they reached Turn 6, the race was already over.

That's not a strategy failure. That's not a driver mistake. That's a car that cannot compete on the straights, and Miami has two of them in the first five turns. Ferrari showed up to a gunfight with a knife.

Look at Hamilton's fastest lap — Lap 6, when he was pushing hardest. Look at Norris's fastest — Lap 10, when he was managing the gap. The Ferrari is slower when Hamilton is at full attack than the McLaren is when Norris is cruising.

Hamilton's tyres didn't fall off — his degradation was negligible. He didn't lock up, didn't exceed track limits until late when it didn't matter. He drove the race Ferrari gave him, and the race Ferrari gave him was unwinnable from the moment the lights went out.

Ferrari will tell you they're working on it. They'll point to Leclerc's P3 from P4 on the grid — one place gained — as proof the race pace is there. But Leclerc didn't have to fight anyone ahead with a McLaren or a Mercedes.

Hamilton's problem isn't that he's seventh fastest. It's that he's seventh fastest with no way to attack sixth. When your car loses six tenths in one sector, you don't have race craft. You have a procession.

Montreal is next. Another street circuit, but with fewer long straights and more medium-speed corners where Ferrari's downforce can work. If Hamilton finishes seventh again — and if the sector splits look like this again — Ferrari's problem isn't the track. It's the car.

Watch Sector 1 in Canada. If Norris is still pulling half a second there, Ferrari's season is already over.
