Hamilton Lost This Race Before Sector 1 Even Started

Norris won in Miami by half a second per lap. But the entire gap came from one corner. Ferrari's problem isn't strategy — it's the car.

Lando Norris won the Miami Sprint from pole and led every lap. Lewis Hamilton started seventh and finished seventh. The gap between them was 22 seconds.

Here's the uncomfortable truth for Ferrari: Hamilton didn't lose this race because he started six places back. He lost it because his car can't turn.

And he was actually 0.11 seconds faster in Sector 3, the final technical section before the pit straight. Ferrari had race-winning pace through two-thirds of this track.

But Sector 1 is low-speed corners, tight hairpins, and direction changes. And the Ferrari can't rotate. Every single lap, Norris disappeared down the road before Hamilton even reached Turn 6. By the time they hit the back straight, it was already over.

The gap evolution chart is brutal. Norris started 4.3 seconds up the road from Hamilton on Lap 1. By the chequered flag, it was 21.7 seconds. That's not traffic. That's not strategy. That's 0.6 seconds per lap, compounded across 19 laps, all coming from the same five corners.

Hamilton's degradation numbers actually look better than Norris's — the Ferrari was losing 0.016 seconds per lap to tyre wear, while Hamilton's lap times stayed remarkably stable. The medium tyre wasn't the problem. The aero platform was.

This is the nightmare scenario for Ferrari heading to Montreal. The Canadian Grand Prix has a hairpin. It has a chicane complex. It has tight, low-speed corners where you need to throw the car into the apex and trust it'll grip.

If Ferrari shows up in Canada with the same balance they had in Miami, Hamilton will spend another 19 laps — or 70 laps in the full Grand Prix — watching McLarens disappear at every corner entry. The speed is there. The straight-line pace is competitive. But if you can't turn the car, none of that matters.

Everyone will say Norris controlled the Sprint from the front, that he managed the gap, that McLaren had the pace advantage. All true.

But the story isn't that McLaren were faster. The story is that Ferrari were only slow in one specific place, and it cost them everything. Fix the front end, and Hamilton's suddenly fighting for podiums instead of finishing where he started.

Montreal will tell us if Ferrari know where the problem is. Because if they show up with the same car, we already know how this ends.
