Four point three seconds. That's how much slower Bortoleto was than Hulkenberg per lap in qualifying. Not four-tenths. Not one second. Four full seconds.

That is not a talent gap. Max Verstappen in his prime couldn't find four seconds on a single flying lap if you spotted his teammate a broken front wing. This was a setup disaster — and Audi sent Bortoleto out to suffer through it anyway.

Look at the pit stop count. Hulkenberg made five stops across the qualifying sessions, constantly iterating on setup and tyre strategy. Bortoleto made one.

One. He went out on softs for three laps, the team saw the lap times, and then... nothing. No adjustments. No second attempt on a different compound. They left him out there to twist in the Miami heat with a car that was fundamentally wrong.

Hulkenberg started on mediums, felt out the car, then switched to softs and ran them for 11 laps with degradation trending faster each lap — classic Miami heat management. Bortoleto got soft tyres from the jump and was pulled after three laps.

That's not a strategy difference. That's one driver getting the full engineering support and the other getting hung out to dry. You don't debut a rookie at Miami in 52-degree track temps and give him one three-lap stint to figure it out.

Bortoleto's fastest lap came on Lap 2 — his second flying lap of the entire session, before the track had fully rubbered in. Hulkenberg's came on Lap 13, after two pit stops and God knows how many front wing adjustments.

That tells you everything. Hulkenberg was building to a lap. Bortoleto was thrown in cold and told to swim.

The narrative coming out of Miami will be that Bortoleto struggled in his first street circuit qualifying. That he couldn't handle the pressure. That Hulkenberg — the experienced hand — showed him how it's done.

None of that is true. You can't judge a driver when the car underneath him is four seconds off the pace. You can't say he cracked when the team gave up on him after three laps. This was an Audi failure, not a Bortoleto failure — and if the team doesn't fix their qualifying prep process before Montreal, it's going to happen again.
