Antonelli Took Half a Second Out of Miami's First Five Corners

Miami's opening sequence—the long sweeper through Turns 1 and 2, the technical chicane at 3-4, the braking zone into 5—is where fast cars become obvious. Antonelli's Mercedes was 0.504 seconds faster than Colapinto's Alpine through that stretch. The rest of the lap? Another 0.255 seconds in Sector 2, 0.205 in Sector 3. Tidy gains, but the argument was already over.

Colapinto had track limits issues all session—three deleted laps, all at Turn 15—but that's a separate problem. His fastest clean lap was 88.762 seconds. Antonelli's was 87.798. Seven positions separated them at the end.

Qualifying sessions like this—three red flags, multiple track limit deletions—tend to flatten the field. Cars that might otherwise show a two-tenths advantage get squeezed into one-tenth gaps because nobody completes a perfect lap. Antonelli still found half a second in Sector 1. That's not traffic. That's not a setup gamble paying off in one corner. That's a car working better through a complex sequence of corners than the other car.

The Alpine wasn't slow elsewhere. Colapinto's Sector 2 and 3 times were competitive. But by the time he reached Turn 6, the lap was already lost.

Montreal next weekend has a very different Sector 1—two long straights separated by a tight hairpin. If the Mercedes carries this low-speed advantage into Canada, watch the first three corners. That's where Antonelli will build his margin again.
