Mercedes carved out two-thirds of a second through Degners and Spoon. Red Bull couldn't respond.

Kimi Antonelli finished first. Max Verstappen finished eighth. They both stopped once, on the same lap, for the same tyre.

The difference was Sector Two.

Antonelli and Verstappen ran identical strategies: medium tyres until Lap 22, then hard to the flag. The Mercedes was three tenths quicker through Sector One. A tenth and a half through Sector Three. Marginal gains.

Sector Two wasn't marginal. It was 0.651 seconds. Over a full race distance, that's not a car advantage — it's a different postcode.

The gap only went one way

Antonelli led from Lap 21 and never gave it back. The gap climbed steadily to over 30 seconds by the chequered flag.

Suzuka's Sector Two is seven corners of commitment and precision. Degner 1 and 2 are blind. The hairpin punishes anyone who misses the apex. Spoon rewards confidence on entry.

The Mercedes hooked up through all of it. The Red Bull didn't.

Verstappen's hard tyres degraded at 1.047 seconds per lap after his stop. Antonelli's degraded at 0.820. Even with a tyre offset, the Red Bull was losing ground. When both cars were on equal rubber, the gap was clinical.

Red Bull has work to do before Miami. Verstappen finished eighth — seven places behind his teammate Hadjar, who took twelfth. The car wasn't just slow through Sector Two. It was losing time everywhere except the straights.

Mercedes, meanwhile, found something in Japan. Antonelli led 32 laps and controlled the race after taking it from George Russell on Lap 21. Russell finished fourth.

If the W18 has this kind of edge through technical sections, Miami's going to be uncomfortable viewing for Milton Keynes.
