Hadjar went into Suzuka knowing he had to match Kimi Antonelli. The Mercedes rookie had won the opening two rounds. Red Bull needed an answer. Instead, they got a masterclass in what happens when one driver finds half a second in the middle sector and the other can't figure out where it's coming from.

By lap 11, Antonelli had laid down his fastest lap: 1:28.778. Hadjar's best came on lap 14: 1:29.978. The gap told you everything about the result — P1 versus P8 — but it didn't tell you when Hadjar realised he was beaten.

It's Antonelli carrying more speed through the hairpin because he trusts the front end. Lap 14 was Hadjar's fastest lap. It was also the lap where he stopped trying to match Antonelli and started trying to secure P8. You don't bin a 1:29.9 at Suzuka unless you're pushing — but you don't find 1.2 seconds if you're still hunting pole. The telemetry shows a driver who hit his limit and knew it.

Antonelli, meanwhile, kept his foot in. His lap 15 stop came after he'd already set his time. Hadjar pitted on lap 17 — two laps later, chasing a gap that was already unrecoverable. By then, the session had three red flags and Arvid Lindblad's deleted time at Turn 13. Hadjar wasn't part of that chaos. He was already out of the fight.
