The killer? Hadjar's tyres were already thirteen laps old at that point. Pitting him achieved nothing except guaranteeing he'd restart behind drivers on identical rubber with better track position. He finished fifteenth in a race where Liam Lawson started thirteenth and finished seventh. Same grid traffic, opposite directions.

The frustrating part is that this was a recoverable race for both of them. Verstappen had the pace to move forward in the first stint — his mediums were degrading at barely 0.1 seconds per lap through lap thirteen, which is essentially zero — but Red Bull called him in under the safety car instead of gambling on track position. Hadjar had nineteen laps of tyre life left when he pitted. Both decisions prioritized fresh rubber over track position in a sprint where track position is everything.

The result: Verstappen went eighth to ninth. Hadjar went tenth to fifteenth. Russell won from pole. Ferrari's double-podium came from fourth and sixth on the grid. Red Bull threw away a chance to score decent points by overthinking a nineteen-lap race.

Here's what to watch in Japan: does Red Bull trust their race pace enough to hold position, or will they keep chasing tyre offsets that get destroyed by safety cars? Because the speed is clearly there — Verstappen's medium-tyre pace was genuinely strong before the restart chaos. But in a sprint, strategy has to be simple: get track position, hold track position, score points.

Red Bull did the opposite. They chose complexity over simplicity and finished with one car in ninth and one in fifteenth. That's not bad luck. That's bad strategy execution, and the data receipts are damning.
