Ferrari got the call right, gained four positions for free, and still couldn't beat Mercedes on equal rubber.

Charles Leclerc started sixth and finished second without overtaking a single car on track. George Russell started on pole, pitted on the same lap, and won anyway.

Ferrari nailed the strategy call. It didn't matter.

When the safety car was deployed on Lap 13, Ferrari made the right call immediately. Leclerc dived into the pits, swapped his mediums for softs, and emerged fourth — ahead of Hamilton, Norris, and Antonelli, all of whom he'd been running behind moments earlier.

Russell made the same call. He'd led every racing lap except the two times Hamilton briefly got ahead, and he emerged from the safety car period still in front. The field bunched up, everyone had fresh rubber, and Leclerc had a free pass into podium contention. Six laps to hunt down the Mercedes.

Here's the problem: Leclerc couldn't get any closer. Both drivers were on the same compound, both had the same track position advantage from the safety car gamble, and Russell controlled the gap without breaking stride. Leclerc ran consistent laps in the 1:20s — so did Russell. The Ferrari wasn't slow. The Mercedes was just faster.

This wasn't a strategy loss. Ferrari got the timing perfect, extracted maximum value from the safety car, and gave Leclerc clean air on fresh softs. The four positions he gained were pure luck, yes — but the team still had to recognize the window and execute. They did. It still wasn't enough to challenge for the win.

The uncomfortable truth for Ferrari heading to Suzuka: when both teams get the strategy right, Mercedes is just quicker. Leclerc's mediums degraded marginally faster than Russell's in the opening stint, and his softs couldn't find an extra tenth when it mattered.
