Verstappen Won. Tsunoda Drove the Better Race.

The narrative will be about Verstappen's win, because that's how we score these things. But this sprint was a survival test disguised as a race — nineteen laps interrupted by three safety cars, a red flag on the final tour, and track limits violations raining down like confetti. Ten different drivers had lap times deleted. Half the grid that started in the top six didn't finish.

Verstappen managed it from the front, where managing means not binning it on cold tyres at restarts. Tsunoda managed it from deep in the pack, where every restart was a game of Russian roulette with cold brakes and drivers fighting over scraps.

Look at the degradation numbers. Verstappen's tyres got faster as the stint went on — negative 0.58 seconds per lap degradation, which in a normal race would be impossible but makes perfect sense when two-thirds of your laps are run behind a safety car. Tsunoda's mediums degraded normally: half a second slower by the end of the stint.

Yet Tsunoda closed a twenty-second gap. Not through superior machinery. Not through tyre life. Through execution at restarts, which is the only place you can actually race in a sprint chopped into five separate green-flag segments.

Verstappen had one job: don't lose the lead at three consecutive restarts. He did it. Clean. Professional. Exactly what you'd expect from someone who has been doing this for a decade.

Tsunoda had a different job: gain eleven positions through a demolition derby where Norris, Piastri, Alonso, Ocon, and Stroll all failed to finish. Where Hulkenberg dropped nine places despite starting fourth. Where the stewards deleted lap times from half the field for track limits violations, including Verstappen himself.

This is what gets lost in the headlines. Verstappen's fastest lap came on Lap 7, when the track was still settling and before the real carnage began. Tsunoda's fastest lap was Lap 15 — eight laps deeper into a stint that had already seen two safety car periods and was heading toward a third.

That's not the profile of a driver managing position. That's someone who knew the only way to P7 from P18 was to push beyond where the tyres wanted to go, and then do it again at the next restart, and again at the one after that.

Verstappen won the sprint. He earned his eight points. But when you start on pole in a race that turns into a restart lottery, finishing first is the baseline expectation, not an achievement.

Tsunoda gained eleven positions through conditions that eliminated drivers with better cars and better grid slots. That's the harder job. That's the one that required decisions, risks, and edges found on track rather than protected from the front.
