Franco Colapinto's Lap 1 Gamble Bought Him Nothing

Alpine rolled the dice on a Lap 1 Safety Car stop — and still finished 14th.

Franco Colapinto started 17th. The Safety Car came out on Lap 1. Alpine saw an opportunity — pit him now, take fresh tyres, and steal track position while everyone else sits behind the Safety Car.

He finished 14th. Three places gained. Same tyres as everyone else. Eighteen laps of nothing.

The logic was sound in the moment. Five DNFs, two Safety Cars in the first five laps, a red flag at the end — chaos favours the bold. Get Colapinto onto new mediums while the field is bunched, and maybe the strategy pays off if another Safety Car shuffles the deck later.

Except everyone was already on mediums. This wasn't a case of switching compounds or gambling on a tyre offset. Colapinto pitted from 17th, bolted on the same tyre everyone else was running, and rejoined the race with zero strategic differentiation and a 25-second pit loss he'd never recover.

Look at the top two bars — both drivers ran mediums to the flag. Colapinto's stop gave him nothing except track position he lost anyway.

The three positions he gained? Alonso, Norris, and Piastri — all retired within a lap. He didn't pass anyone. He inherited places from carnage and then spent the rest of the sprint being re-passed by drivers on the same tyre, with 18 laps of heat in them.

Verstappen, who started on pole and stayed out, won the race. George Russell finished second. Carlos Sainz third. Lewis Hamilton fourth. All of them on the original set of mediums they started on. The tyres lasted 19 laps. There was no deg cliff. There was no strategy window. There was just one sprint race, and Alpine unnecessarily gave Colapinto a 25-second handicap in it.

This wasn't a calculated risk that didn't pay off. It was a panicked reaction to a Safety Car that ignored the most basic question: what does this actually gain us? In a sprint race with no tyre strategy, the only thing that mattered was track position. Alpine threw theirs away for tyres Colapinto didn't need.

Three places gained. Fourteen drivers ahead at the flag. If that's a lottery win, Alpine needs to stop buying tickets.

Mexico City is next. High altitude, low grip, and real tyre degradation. If Alpine see another early Safety Car and get that same itch to pit — someone on the pit wall needs to ask the question they didn't ask at COTA: what compound are we switching to, and why does it matter?

Because if the answer is "the same tyre everyone else has," the call is stay out.
