That's where the good decisions ended. Williams had just been handed track position they had no business holding. The correct play: protect it with a long middle stint and convert the free stop into actual points. Instead, they ran Albon on mediums until lap 36 — twenty-nine laps on a compound showing near-zero degradation — then bolted on softs for a final twenty-lap sprint that gained him nothing.

Look at the middle stint. Albon's mediums were gaining time — negative degradation, lapping consistently in the low 1:40s while holding position. The tyres weren't asking to come off. Williams wasn't under pressure. There was no strategic reason to pit when they did.

Instead, they waited until lap 36 to make the second stop, five laps after Norris and the lead pack had already cycled through. By then, the undercut window had closed. Albon rejoined behind cars that had been 20 seconds back an hour earlier, and spent the final twenty laps on soft tyres fighting backmarkers instead of collecting points.

The frustrating part isn't that Williams finished P14. It's that they had a P10 strategy and chose not to run it. Pit Albon on lap 30 — when the leaders stopped — extend the first stint advantage, and you're racing Alonso and Bearman for the final point. Pit him on lap 36 and you're racing no one.

Verstappen ran two stops. Albon ran three. The difference wasn't tyre choice. It was that Red Bull maximized a normal race and Williams squandered a safety car gift.
