The numbers are damning. Antonelli's average lap time across the race was faster than the winner's. He ran a degradation rate on the opening medium tyre stint that was half a second per lap worse than Verstappen's — the tyre was falling off a cliff — and Mercedes still kept him out.

Verstappen pitted on Lap 33. Antonelli should have been in two laps earlier, maybe three. Instead, Mercedes waited until Lap 31 — except that's when they called him in. By the time he boxed, Verstappen had already undercut him and opened a gap that would never close.

Once Antonelli finally switched to softs, the degradation vanished. He went from falling backwards to running race-winning pace — but by then he was 75 seconds down and fighting backmarkers. The car was there. The strategy wasn't.

This is the kind of loss that haunts a team. Antonelli had the pace to win in Austin. He didn't need a Safety Car, didn't need Verstappen to make a mistake. He needed his strategists to call him in when the tyre delta screamed that it was time.

Instead, they hesitated. Two laps of hesitation. And Verstappen, running the slower car, walked away with a victory he never had to fight for.
