Hulkenberg's Sector 2 Didn't Matter

The Kick Sauber driver was nine-tenths slower in the middle sector and still came home fifth. The question isn't how Piastri won — it's how Hulkenberg stayed in the conversation.

Oscar Piastri was 0.897 seconds faster than Nico Hulkenberg through Sector 2. Piastri finished first. Hulkenberg finished fifth.

That's not how gaps are supposed to work.

Nearly a full second is not a rounding error. It's not track position or traffic. It's a fundamental difference in what the car could do through Turns 6 to 9, lap after lap, for 66 laps.

Piastri's McLaren was faster everywhere. But the interesting number isn't the 0.9s in Sector 2. It's the 0.1s in Sector 1 and the 0.8s in Sector 3. Hulkenberg clawed back a combined 0.9 seconds in the parts of the circuit where straightline speed and tyre management matter more than the chassis.

The Kick Sauber wasn't competitive in the mid-speed corners. It was competitive enough everywhere else that a driver starting 15th could finish 10 places higher than he began.

Hulkenberg's final stint on softs degraded badly — his pace dropped by more than a third of a second per lap. Piastri's final stint degraded even worse, half a second per lap. The difference is Piastri had a 110-second gap to protect. Hulkenberg was defending fifth from George Russell.
