Pierre Gasly found three tenths in the first sector and finished eighth. The last time a driver dominated one sector this badly at Catalunya and still lost the session was nearly a decade ago — and it was the same problem then.

Barcelona 2016. Daniel Ricciardo, sector one monster, qualified sixth. The Red Bull was planted through the high-speed opening sequence, then bled time everywhere else because the car was set up for one thing and the circuit demanded three.

Nine years later, Pierre Gasly just did the same thing in an Alpine. Same circuit. Same problem. Same result.

The 0.335-second advantage Gasly carried through Turn 5 is not a fluke. It's not traffic, it's not a tow, it's not one perfect lap. It's a car set up to devour the high-speed sweeps at the start of this circuit. The Alpine was absolutely nailed through Turns 1 to 5 — faster entry speeds, better rotation, more confidence on the throttle.

But Barcelona has never rewarded cars that only work in one sector. The 2016 Red Bull learned that the hard way when Ricciardo's sector one pace couldn't compensate for a rear end that slid through the middle sector and wouldn't put power down in the final complex. Gasly's Alpine just re-enacted it.

The difference between Gasly's fastest lap — a 72.199 on lap 17 — and Piastri's 71.546 on lap 13 is 0.653 seconds. More than half of that deficit was erased before sector two even started. What happened next was inevitable: the McLaren, set up for balance across all three sectors, clawed back time in the technical middle section and the long, flowing final sector.

This isn't about Gasly making a mistake. It's about Alpine chasing sector one performance and paying for it everywhere else. The 2016 Red Bull made the same trade-off — prioritise the high-speed entry phase, accept the consequences later in the lap. It cost Ricciardo fourth on the grid. It just cost Gasly seventh positions.

Barcelona is the circuit that exposes setup compromises because it demands everything: high-speed stability, low-speed traction, mid-corner balance. Cars that dominate one phase and surrender the others always get found out here. The 2016 Red Bull. The 2018 Haas, which was rapid through Turn 3 and hopeless through Turn 9. Now the 2025 Alpine.

The frustrating part is that Gasly's sector one pace proves Alpine can build a front end that works at this level. But the rest of the car isn't keeping up, and the result is a qualifying session where the driver does everything right in the first third of the lap and finishes eighth anyway.

Montreal is next. Sector one there is shorter, tighter, less about sustained high-speed commitment and more about getting the car turned and stopped. If Alpine show up with the same philosophy — prioritising entry speed over all-lap balance — they'll lose even more time. The straights will forgive a weak middle sector. Barcelona doesn't. Canada won't either.

Gasly found three tenths in one sector and it bought him nothing. The last time a driver did that at Catalunya, it was 2016 and the lesson was clear: you can't win a qualifying session with one sector. Alpine should have learned that by now.
