Barcelona 2016 Should Have Taught Alpine This Lesson Already

Pierre Gasly found three tenths in the first sector and finished eighth. The last time a driver dominated one sector this badly at Catalunya and still lost the session was nearly a decade ago — and it was the same problem then.

Barcelona 2016. Daniel Ricciardo, sector one monster, qualified sixth. The Red Bull was planted through the high-speed opening sequence, then bled time everywhere else because the car was set up for one thing and the circuit demanded three.

Nine years later, Pierre Gasly just did the same thing in an Alpine. Same circuit. Same problem. Same result.

Key Finding
Gasly's sector one pace was genuine, but Alpine's inability to carry it through the lap is a setup philosophy error we've seen before at this circuit.
