Singapore 2008 Taught Us Nothing: Hamilton's Sector Two Mastery Wasted Again

Lewis Hamilton was nearly a second faster through the critical middle sector — and still finished 80 seconds behind George Russell. We've seen this exact pattern before, and it ended the same way.

Singapore 2008: fastest car on track, brutal middle sector pace, a strategy call that made none of it matter. Seventeen years between races. The same mistake.

Sector two at Singapore is the one that breaks drivers. It's seven corners with no straight longer than 200 metres, full steering load, zero margin. The kerbs are painted murder. You get sector two right, you win. Hamilton got it right on lap 48 — nine-tenths clear of his teammate, who was about to win the race.

The last time we saw this exact delta pattern at this circuit — one Mercedes driver dominant in sector two while the other controlled the race — was 2019. That year it was Russell (then at Williams) posting faster sector splits than eventual winner Sebastian Vettel. The difference? Vettel's strategy kept him ahead. Hamilton's in 2025 did the opposite.

Ferrari put Hamilton on a three-stop strategy. Medium to lap 24, hard to lap 46, then softs for the final 16 laps of a wet-dry-wet Singapore Grand Prix. The degradation tells you everything: +1.268 seconds per lap on that final stint. Russell, who stayed on hards from lap 25 to the flag, was losing just 0.018 seconds per lap — effectively neutral degradation.

The mathematics are brutal. Hamilton's sector two advantage on his fastest lap was 0.920s. His tyre disadvantage over the final stint averaged 1.3 seconds per lap. You can be the fastest driver through the hardest sector on the calendar. If your tyres are dying and your teammate's aren't, you finish 80 seconds behind.

Singapore 2008 ended with the wrong Ferrari winning because of a badly timed safety car and a fuel hose. Singapore 2025 ended with the wrong Ferrari strategy because someone thought softs would survive 16 laps on a drying street circuit with four separate rain interruptions. Both races featured a driver with demonstrable pace advantage in the most technical sector — and both drivers lost.

The 2008 precedent should have been the warning. When you have the car underneath you at Singapore, when you're faster in sector two, you do not give that away with tyres that won't last. History doesn't always repeat. Sometimes it just watches you make the same mistake twice and shrugs.

The speed trace comparison shows what the sector deltas already told us: Hamilton was on a different plane through Singapore's technical heart. But speed traces don't show tyre life. They don't show that Russell's lap 27 was on fresh hards with 36 laps of life ahead. Hamilton's lap 48 was the first flying lap on softs — the fastest he'd go all stint, before the degradation curve bent upward.

Austin is next. COTA has a sector one that eats tyres and a sector three that rewards outright commitment. If Ferrari brings this same strategic philosophy to Texas — prioritising theoretical peak pace over race-long consistency — we'll see this same delta pattern again. Hamilton fastest in one sector. Russell on the top step. Some patterns don't need seventeen years to repeat. Three weeks is enough.
