Carlos Sainz Drove a Perfect Wet Race. Ferrari Threw It Away.

From P18 to P10 in monsoon chaos, Sainz read every weather shift correctly. Hamilton, one stop earlier on the wrong tyre, lost two places from P6.

Carlos Sainz started eighteenth in Singapore and crossed the line tenth, lapped but brilliant. Lewis Hamilton started sixth and finished eighth, also lapped. One of them drove a perfect wet race. The other listened to his pit wall.

Singapore threw four weather transitions at the field: rain on, rain off, rain on, rain off. Every team had the same information. Only one driver stayed on mediums for fifty laps.

Sainz started on mediums. When the first rain came, he stayed out. When it stopped, he stayed out. When it rained again, he stayed out. The Williams pit wall trusted him to manage the tyre through every transition, and he gained eight positions without changing compound. His degradation rate: negative 0.015 seconds per lap. He was getting faster.

Hamilton also started on mediums. He also had negative degradation — 0.061 seconds per lap, better than Sainz. Then Ferrari called him in on Lap 24, twenty-six laps earlier than Sainz would stop, and bolted on hards.

The hard tyre is a defensive call. It's what you fit when you think the rain is coming back and you want to cover yourself. Hamilton's pace on hards was fine — 96.2 seconds average, seventeen-hundredths slower per lap degradation than the mediums. But the rain never stayed long enough to justify giving up track position.

By Lap 46, Ferrari panicked again and put Hamilton on softs. Twenty-two laps later, his degradation was positive 1.268 seconds per lap — a tyre cliff that left him averaging 98.1 seconds a lap, slower than his opening medium stint. Sainz, who waited until Lap 50 to switch to softs, ran them for eleven laps and posted his fastest lap of the race on Lap 61.

Hamilton's final soft stint was slower than Sainz's opening medium stint. That is the cost of reacting to weather instead of reading it.

This wasn't strategy. It was guessing. Ferrari saw rain and flinched twice — first onto hards, then onto softs when the hards didn't deliver. Williams watched the same weather radar and left Sainz out until the race forced their hand. Track position in Singapore is worth more than any theoretical tyre advantage, and Sainz understood that from P18. Hamilton's engineers apparently did not.

Austin is in two weeks. If it rains, watch who blinks first.
