There's a moment on Lap 48 where Hamilton's Ferrari looks like it's sliding on rails through Turns 8 to 14. Committed, precise, impossibly fast. He set the quickest time through Singapore's technical middle sector—over a second clear of Alonso, who finished ahead of him.

Sector 2 at Singapore is where races are won. It's the most technical section of the most demanding circuit on the calendar—seven corners including the high-speed left-hander at Turn 11 and the brutal compression of Turns 12-13. You need precision, trust in the front end, and absolute commitment. Hamilton had all three.

He was the fastest driver through that sector. Not just of the two drivers we're comparing—of everyone in the top eight. Faster than Russell, who won. Faster than Verstappen in second. Nearly a full second faster than Alonso, who was slowest of the leaders through that stretch.

But here's what the sector time can't show you: Hamilton's race was already over by the time he set that fastest lap. He'd made two stops—medium to hard on Lap 24, hard to soft on Lap 46. Alonso made one, swapping his opening softs for mediums on Lap 27 and riding them to the flag.

The degradation data tells you why Ferrari panicked. Hamilton's softs in the final stint were falling off at over a second per lap—catastrophic for a compound that's supposed to be the quickest. But the move to softs was itself an admission of defeat. They'd already lost track position with that first stop, gambling on a two-stop in conditions where everyone who mattered ran one.

So Hamilton carved the perfect lap through Singapore's most unforgiving sector and finished P8. Alonso survived on older rubber and took P7. That's the gap between driver pace and race strategy—and it's not the driver who gets to choose.

What made it worse: those five track limits violations in the final two laps. Hamilton knew by then. He was pushing because he had nothing left to lose.

At Austin, watch whether Ferrari commits early to one stop or leaves Hamilton out to hedge. Because Singapore proved something they should already know: when Hamilton has the pace, the last thing you do is give him two extra pit stops to throw it away.
