Hamilton never got to fight. Ferrari gave Leclerc the race-winning strategy — stretch the mediums, pit late, attack on fresh hards — and gave Hamilton the opposite. When you pit on lap 23 and your teammate pits on lap 29, you've already lost.

Here's what happened. Hamilton started P7, Leclerc P4. Both ran the medium tyre to open the race. At lap 23, Ferrari called Hamilton in for hards. Standard stuff — get him out of traffic, clear air, build the race from there.

Then they left Leclerc out until lap 29. Six more laps on the mediums. Six laps to build a gap on fresh tyres while Hamilton was bedding in the hards. By the time Leclerc finally stopped, he was 36 seconds up the road. Game over.

The degradation numbers tell you everything. Hamilton's mediums were slowing by two-thousandths per lap — essentially flat. Leclerc's mediums were losing half a tenth per lap. Leclerc's tyres were dying and Ferrari still kept him out longer.

Why? Because they knew the mediums would hold. They knew Leclerc could push through the deg and come out ahead. And they were right — after his stop on lap 29, Leclerc's hard tyres barely degraded at all. He ran the final 21 laps losing six-thousandths per lap. Hamilton's hards dropped half a tenth per lap over 27 laps.

Let's be clear: Leclerc drove brilliantly. He managed those dying mediums, nailed the out-lap on hards, and brought the car home P3 while Hamilton finished P7. But the result was decided by strategy, not speed.

Ferrari had one long-stint strategy to give and one short-stint strategy. They gave the good one to the driver starting P4 and the bad one to the driver starting P7. The four-tenths lap time gap everyone will quote? That's not Leclerc being faster — that's Leclerc getting to run his tyres in the optimal window while Hamilton was either on old hards or managing new ones in traffic.
