Jeddah Has Always Punished This Mistake — And It Just Caught Sainz

Jeddah is the only street circuit on the calendar where Sector 1 decides everything. It's not Monaco, where you can claw time back in the tunnel. It's not Singapore, where a perfect final sector can salvage a lap. The first eight corners at Jeddah are a commitment test — blind, high-speed, and utterly unforgiving — and if you don't carry the speed through them, you've already lost.

Sainz was 0.555 seconds slower than Verstappen in Sector 1. He clawed back 0.066s in Sector 2 and another 0.109s in Sector 3, but the arithmetic was never in his favour. He finished qualifying in P6. Verstappen took pole. The margin between them across the full lap — 0.73 seconds — was just the Sector 1 deficit, compounded.

This is not a new story at this circuit. In 2022, Verstappen put it on pole with a 1:28.200. Leclerc was second, 0.411s back — and 0.388s of that deficit came in Sector 1 alone. In 2023, Sergio Pérez took pole position with a near-perfect opening sector. George Russell was second, six tenths down, and five of those tenths were gone before he reached Turn 9.

The pattern is clear: Jeddah rewards commitment in Sector 1 and offers no second chances. The high-speed blind entries punish hesitation. The walls are close enough that you can't afford to miss an apex. And if you don't trust the car through the kink at Turn 4 or the flat-out run into Turn 8, the lap is already over before you've reached the technical middle section.

Sainz's problem wasn't just the Williams — though the car clearly doesn't have the front-end stability that Red Bull has found. His problem was that Jeddah exposes any front-end uncertainty more brutally than any other circuit on the calendar. The slightest doubt costs you half a tenth per corner, and there are eight corners in Sector 1. The mathematics are merciless.

Seven drivers had laps deleted for track limits violations during this session — almost all of them in Turns 2, 7, and 8, the critical high-speed entries in Sector 1. Jack Doohan lost four separate laps. Gabriel Bortoleto had three deleted. They were all trying to find the same thing Verstappen found — commitment through the opening sector — and the track rejected them. Sainz kept his lap legal, but he didn't find the speed.

Miami is a different kind of street circuit — slower corners, more opportunities to recover from a bad sector. But the principle remains: if you don't trust the car at corner entry, you will not find lap time. Sainz has six days to build that trust. The telemetry from Jeddah suggests he'll need every one of them.
