Not because the track dried out differently for him than everyone else. He stopped improving because somewhere around Laranjinha, every single lap, he realized there was nothing he could do.

São Paulo's Sector 2 is four corners — Laranjinha, Pinheirinho, and the sequence that follows. It's where confidence matters more than setup. You're carrying speed through off-camber corners on a drying line that's maybe two metres wide, and if you don't trust the front end, you're done.

Norris was more than a second faster through those four corners. Not over the whole lap. Not in the high-speed stuff where downforce decides everything. Just there, in the part of the circuit where you either commit or you don't.

And then Sector 2 would come, and Norris would take that tenth back plus another full second, and Gasly would know he was fighting a car he couldn't beat. By lap 13, his fastest lap of the race, he'd already accepted it. The degradation data shows the softs weren't falling off — he was still averaging 73.8 seconds per lap. He just wasn't trying to find more.

This is what makes wet-weather racing so brutal. In the dry, you can tell yourself it's the car, the setup, the wind direction. In the wet, when someone is faster through the corners that matter, you know it's not the car. It's them. And there's nothing you can do except hold position and hope they make a mistake.

Norris didn't make a mistake. Gasly finished P8, five places up from where he started, and on paper that's a solid recovery drive. But anyone watching the onboard from lap 13 onward could see the truth: he wasn't racing Norris anymore. He was racing everyone else.

Las Vegas is next, and it's a very different circuit — long straights, heavy braking zones, no mid-speed corners where confidence decides everything. Gasly will be relieved.
