Williams Lost a Win in Brazil. By a Pit Stop.

Alexander Albon had the fastest car in São Paulo by more than half a second. He finished eleventh because Williams waited five laps too long.

Alexander Albon had the fastest car in São Paulo. Not fastest on track — fastest car. Over the race distance, he was more than half a second quicker per lap than Lando Norris. He finished eleventh.

Williams waited five laps too long

Look at when the green bars start: Norris stopped on Lap 30, Albon on Lap 35. Those five laps gave McLaren the undercut — and the race.

This was a two-stop race, and Williams got the first stop catastrophically wrong. Norris pitted from the lead on Lap 30 to take softs. Albon was running second, five laps into clear air, with the pace to cover. Williams left him out until Lap 35.

Five laps. In those five laps, Norris exited the pits, carved through traffic, and was already pulling away by the time Albon finally came in. The gap went from two seconds to six. The undercut is not optional in São Paulo. You either take it or you lose track position. Williams chose neither — they just sat there.

Albon spent the rest of the race stuck behind slower cars with no way through. Williams repeated the mistake at the second stop: Norris pitted on Lap 50, Albon on Lap 55. Another five-lap delay. By then it didn't matter — the damage was done on the first stop.

This wasn't a marginal call. Albon had genuine winning pace. The degradation data shows his mediums were coming back to him — negative degradation, improving lap times — while Norris was managing temperature. Albon's soft stint was cleaner, his third stint was faster. None of it mattered because Williams handed McLaren a gap they never had to defend.

Williams had a car fast enough to win — or at minimum, finish top five. Instead, Albon crossed the line eleventh, 54 seconds behind Norris, trapped in a DRS train with no strategy left to deploy. The pace advantage was real. The tyre management was there. The pit wall wasn't.

Las Vegas is next. Williams need to decide if they're racing the cars ahead or reacting to the cars behind. Because in Brazil, they did neither — they just watched the race happen to them.
