Red Bull brought one car to São Paulo. Max Verstappen drove it to the podium from P19. Yuki Tsunoda drove it into the stewards' office twice, collected 20 seconds of penalties, and finished behind everyone who was still running. The gap between them at the flag was a minute and fifteen seconds.

Let's be clear about what happened here. Verstappen started four positions behind Tsunoda on the grid. Both drivers ran three-stop strategies. Both had the same machinery, the same engineers in the garage, the same Interlagos weather. The only variable was who was holding the steering wheel.

Verstappen's race was a masterclass in chaos management. Early safety cars, a VSC window, drivers retiring left and right — and he threaded every needle. Tsunoda's race was a penalty collection tour that ended with the stewards investigating whether he'd even served his first penalty correctly. Spoiler: he hadn't.

Here's the thing that makes this unforgivable: Tsunoda was three-tenths slower per lap than Verstappen on the same tyre compounds. Not over one stint. Not in traffic. All race. The medium tyre degradation data shows Verstappen losing eighteen-thousandths of a second per lap to wear. Tsunoda? Gaining pace on the mediums, to the tune of minus-0.18 seconds per lap. He had better tyres than Max for most of the race and still got lapped.

That's before we get to the penalties. Lap 12: causing a collision, 10 seconds. Lap 26: noted for failing to serve the penalty correctly. Lap 28: under investigation. Lap 33: another 10 seconds for the botched penalty service. By Lap 50 he was still serving time while Verstappen was hunting down race leader Lando Norris.

Verstappen made three stops work. Tsunoda made three stops necessary.

The counter-argument writes itself: Verstappen is a three-time world champion, Tsunoda is in his fourth season, of course there's a gap. Sure. But 16 positions? With fresher tyres for two-thirds of the race? That's not experience. That's the difference between a driver who can read a race five laps ahead and a driver who can't get through Turn 1 without collecting the stewards' calling card.

Red Bull has spent this season claiming their car is a handful, unstable on entry, difficult to extract pace from. Verstappen just proved that's a convenient excuse. The RB21 went from P19 to the podium in 71 laps on a track that's notoriously hard to pass on. It didn't do that on its own.

What to watch in Las Vegas: whether Red Bull finally admits what São Paulo made obvious. They don't have a car problem. They have a second seat problem. Verstappen can drag this machine to results it has no business achieving. Tsunoda, apparently, can drag it to the stewards' office and not much else.

The gap at the flag was 75 seconds. The gap in quality was wider.
