Piastri beat Russell by five seconds in a nineteen-lap sprint. Russell was only six hundredths slower in sector one. He was only eight hundredths slower in sector three.

He was 0.432 seconds slower in sector two.

Sector two at Qatar is turns six through ten — the fastest part of the circuit. Long, sweeping corners where you carry speed through multiple apexes. The kind of section where a car either flows or doesn't.

Russell's didn't. Every single lap, he lost the race again. He'd get through sector one roughly level. He'd haul back a tenth in sector three. And in between, the McLaren would disappear down the road.

The gap at the end was 5.0 seconds. Multiply 0.432 by nineteen laps and you get 8.2 seconds. Russell clawed some of that back in the other sectors, but not enough.

The sprint was decided in the first five laps. After that, it was just repetition. Same corner sequence. Same deficit. Russell never got closer than 1.3 seconds, and that was on lap one.
