Let's be clear about what happened here. Gasly started P19, ran the hard tyre while everyone around him was on mediums, and carved through the field. By lap 17, he was running in the points. Then Alpine called him in for soft tyres.

With two laps to go. In a 19-lap sprint race. Where track position is everything and there were no Safety Cars to gift back the time lost in the pits.

Gasly was clawing back time lap after lap — then the pit stop dropped him 60 seconds behind Piastri. He never recovered.

The hard tyre wasn't even degrading. Negative degradation rate: the car was getting quicker, not slower. Gasly was the fastest driver on track and he had clean air ahead. He didn't need fresh rubber. He needed to stay out.

Instead, Alpine brought him in for a compound change that gained him absolutely nothing. No fastest lap on offer in a sprint. No championship points to protect. Just a decision that turned a top-six finish into P18.

Compare that to Piastri's afternoon. One stint, medium tyres, no heroics. He managed the deg, kept it clean, and brought it home. McLaren didn't need to overthink it.

Gasly's pace advantage over Piastri — 0.8 seconds per lap — was the biggest gap between the fastest car and the winner in any sprint this season. And it went to waste because someone on the Alpine pit wall panicked.

What makes this worse is that Alpine had the data to know this was unnecessary. Gasly's stint pace was stable. The gap to the cars ahead was shrinking. Track limits penalties were flying everywhere — the longer you stayed out, the more chaos you could exploit.

Instead, they made the one call guaranteed to throw away the result: a late stop that cost track position and gave back nothing. In Abu Dhabi next weekend, Alpine needs to trust what the telemetry is telling them. When your driver has the fastest car, let him use it.
