Ferrari Left Hamilton Out in a Race He Could Have Won

Oscar Piastri was faster in two sectors. Lewis Hamilton finished 60 seconds behind him. The gap isn't the pace — it's the strategy that left him on dying tyres through the chaos.

Oscar Piastri was faster than Lewis Hamilton in Sector 1. He was faster in Sector 2. Hamilton was faster in Sector 3. Piastri won the race. Hamilton finished eighth, a full minute behind.

In a wet race with four VSCs, a red flag, and rain that couldn't decide whether to stay or leave, tyre compound mattered more than outright pace. Ferrari put Hamilton on mediums when he needed hards, then hards when the track was coming to him on mediums. Twice. And both times, he lost positions to cars he was demonstrably faster than.

Lap 24: Hamilton pits from P12 under the first major VSC, switching to hard tyres. The track is still wet. Everyone else — including Piastri — goes medium. Within two laps, Hamilton is losing a second per lap to drivers on the same tyre he just came off. He's not slower. The compound is wrong.

By Lap 32, the hards are finally working. Hamilton posts a 99-second lap. Then the VSCs resume. When the track goes green again on Lap 33, Ferrari calls him in for mediums. Piastri, who started his second stint on mediums and drove them into a degradation cliff, switches to hards.

The track is drying. Hamilton's mediums are slower than Piastri's hards by nearly a second per lap. The gap, which was 18 seconds after Hamilton's first stop, balloons to over a minute by the chequered flag. Not because Hamilton was slow — because the tyres Ferrari gave him were fighting the conditions instead of exploiting them.

The gap jumps on Lap 28 and again on Lap 33 — those are Hamilton's pit stops. Piastri's Lap 29 stop barely registers. The strategy difference is the race difference.

Miami rewards traction out of the slow-speed corners — Turns 1, 11, and 16. That's why Hamilton couldn't close the gap even when he was faster in Sector 3. Piastri's advantage in Sectors 1 and 2 came from being on the right compound through the slowest parts of the circuit. Hamilton's tyres couldn't put the power down. It wasn't a driving deficit. It was a strategic one.

Piastri's team got the calls right. Ferrari's pit wall reacted to conditions a lap too late, twice, and handed away track position Hamilton didn't have the tyres to recover.

Imola is in six days. It's a circuit where track position is everything and overtaking requires either a mistake or a massive tyre delta. If Ferrari hesitates on compound calls again, Hamilton won't have the straights to recover what he loses in the pits. Miami was winnable with worse pace than he had. Imola won't be that forgiving.
