Mercedes threw away a win in Mexico with a tyre gamble they didn't need

George Russell was faster than Lando Norris all afternoon in Mexico City. He finished forty-six seconds behind him in seventh. Mercedes made him stop three times when everyone who mattered stopped once.

The numbers make this worse. Russell's race pace — averaged across all seventy-one laps — was 0.7 seconds faster than Norris. That's the gap between winning and finishing mid-pack. He had it in his hands.

Then on lap 48, with Russell running fifth and twenty-three laps still to run, Mercedes brought him in for soft tyres. Norris, running first, stayed out on the mediums he'd fitted on lap 34. So did Leclerc. So did Verstappen. Mercedes looked at a working one-stop and decided Russell needed to do something different.

Here's what killed them: degradation. Russell's soft tyres in that final stint degraded at 0.34 seconds per lap. Norris's mediums? 0.04 seconds per lap. That's not a rounding error — that's a tyre falling off a cliff while the car ahead runs identical lap times for thirty-seven consecutive laps.

Mexico City sits at 2,200 metres. The thin air murders downforce, which murders rear tyres, which makes the soft compound a grenade with a twenty-lap fuse. Mercedes knew this. Every team knew this. Norris proved you could make the medium work to lap seventy-one without losing pace. Russell's engineer should have radioed the pit wall and told them to leave him out.

The frustrating part is that Russell's first two stints were perfectly managed. His opening soft stint ran clean to lap twenty-five with almost no degradation. His middle stint on mediums was faster than Norris across the same compound window. He had track position, he had pace, and he had tyre life.

Then someone on the pit wall decided he needed an offset strategy to chase cars ahead. So they stopped him, fitted tyres that were never going to last, and watched him slide backwards while Norris cruised home unchallenged.

São Paulo is next week, and it's another high-degradation circuit where tyre management decides races. If Mercedes wants Russell anywhere near the podium, they need to trust the data they clearly have. He was faster than the winner. The strategy made sure it didn't matter.
