McLaren threw away the fastest car in Mexico City

Oscar Piastri was three tenths quicker than Lando Norris on race pace. He finished 42 seconds behind him.

Oscar Piastri had the pace to finish on the podium in Mexico City. He was three tenths faster than his teammate across 71 laps. Instead, he finished fifth, 42 seconds behind Lando Norris, who won the race.

The only difference between them was the number of pit stops.

McLaren split strategies between their drivers — nothing unusual there. But the mathematics of Mexico City made this split indefensible. The two-stop needed Piastri to pull back 1.8 seconds per lap on Norris after his Lap 47 stop. He never got close.

On fresh softs against Norris's 13-lap-old mediums, Piastri averaged 81.9 seconds per lap. Norris, managing degradation on worn rubber, averaged 81.8. The offset wasn't there. It was never going to be there.

Here's what McLaren should have known before they called Piastri in: the medium tyre at altitude doesn't fall off a cliff. Norris's mediums degraded at 0.043 seconds per lap across 37 laps. That's manageable. That's raceable.

Piastri's first medium stint, by comparison, degraded at 0.025 seconds per lap — even better. There was no reason to think he couldn't nurse them to the end. Instead, they bolted on softs that immediately began shedding performance at 0.239 seconds per lap.

The two-stop works when you can recover the pit loss through pure pace. Piastri couldn't. His fastest lap of the race — an 80.4 — came on those final-stint softs. Norris, on his one-stop mediums, ran an 80.7. Three tenths across an entire lap is not enough to justify an extra stop.

This wasn't a gamble. It was arithmetic they didn't do.

What makes this decision worse is that Piastri was quicker everywhere. On maximum attack laps, on tyre management, on race trim. He should have been the car pressuring for the win. Instead, McLaren put him on a strategy that required a tyre delta that doesn't exist at 2,200 metres above sea level.

Norris executed the obvious plan. Piastri drove a faster race and lost 40 seconds because someone on the pit wall thought softs would find time that wasn't there. The fastest car finished fifth.

São Paulo is next. The track sits at 800 metres elevation — less than half of Mexico City's altitude. Degradation will be sharper. Tyre offsets will matter.

McLaren needs to arrive with a plan that doesn't require their faster driver to make up gaps that physics won't allow. Because in Brazil, if they guess wrong again, they won't have the car advantage to recover.
