Verstappen takes pole by one hundredth of a second. It wasn't close.

The sector times say something else entirely.

Verstappen was faster than Norris through the first sector. He was faster through the second sector, which includes the hairpin and Spoon Curve. He gave back nearly a tenth in the final sector—130R and the chicane—and still took pole. Norris was quicker than Verstappen in one sector out of three and finished 0.012 seconds behind.

The gap in Sector 2 is the telling number: 0.054 seconds. That's the technical section where a car's mechanical grip and low-speed balance matter most. Verstappen made up half a tenth there and threw it away on the fast run to the line.

Piastri, meanwhile, was 0.032s behind Norris. The second McLaren was closer to the first McLaren than the first McLaren was to the Red Bull in two-thirds of the lap.

Four red flags interrupted the session. Hamilton had a lap deleted for track limits at Turn 1. Stroll lost his at Turn 6. The story at the front remained unchanged every time the session restarted.

Verstappen's pole lap came on Lap 16. Norris set his best on Lap 14. Neither improved after that. The gap stayed at 0.012 seconds.

What to watch in Bahrain: whether Red Bull can hold that Sector 2 advantage on a circuit with three long straights. Verstappen won't have 130R to give away next time.
