Max Verstappen won the Italian Grand Prix from pole. Textbook Red Bull domination, right? Except his teammate started ninth and finished 13th, over a minute behind. When was the last time a race-winning car had a 12-position gap between teammates?

Here's what everyone missed while watching Max cruise: Yuki Tsunoda was 1.7 seconds per lap slower than his teammate. Not in qualifying. In the race. Over 53 laps. In identical cars.

That's not a gap you see between competent teammates. Norris and Piastri were separated by three tenths. Russell and Antonelli by half a second. Even Ferrari's drivers — who reportedly can't stand each other — were within seven tenths. But Verstappen and Tsunoda? Nearly two full seconds.

The narrative will be that Tsunoda had a bad day. He didn't. He ran a clean race, stopped once like everyone else, and drove within his limits. The problem is those limits are nowhere near where they should be in a car that just won by 80 seconds.

Look at the tyre data. Verstappen's mediums degraded at 0.026 seconds per lap. Tsunoda's degraded at 0.034 seconds per lap — 30% faster wear. Same compound, same track temperature, wildly different results. When they both switched to hards, the story repeated: Verstappen's tyres barely degraded at all. Tsunoda's kept falling away at triple the rate.

And before anyone says 'Tsunoda just can't drive' — he's been racing single-seaters for a decade. He knows how to save tyres. The issue is this car only responds to Max's driving style. It's been true for three seasons now, and Monza proved it again.

Tsunoda isn't the problem. He's the canary in the coal mine. When Azerbaijan comes around in two weeks, watch the gap again. If it's still two seconds, Red Bull has a design philosophy crisis — not a driver problem.
