Ferrari's Sector 1 Advantage Didn't Matter

Lewis Hamilton was fastest through Monza's opening chicanes and still finished behind Oscar Piastri. When you're quicker where slipstream matters most and lose anyway, the problem isn't the car.

Lewis Hamilton was the fastest driver through Monza's first two chicanes in qualifying — over a third of a second quicker than Oscar Piastri. He qualified fifth. Piastri qualified third. At the lowest-downforce circuit of the season, Ferrari somehow threw away the one advantage that actually matters.

Monza is a power circuit. Sector 1 is two hard braking zones into first-gear chicanes where slipstream and straight-line speed dictate laptime. Ferrari had both. Hamilton's 0.357-second advantage there wasn't marginal — it was dominant.

And then Ferrari gave it all back. Half a second across Sectors 2 and 3. The Lesmos, Ascari, Parabolica — every corner where mechanical grip and driver confidence matter, McLaren was quicker. By the time Hamilton crossed the line, Piastri was faster overall despite being nowhere through the opening sequence.

Every time the blue line climbs after a braking zone, that's Piastri carrying more speed through the corner. Ferrari's advantage was only on the straights.

This wasn't a driver issue. Hamilton's Sector 1 time proves the car had pace when it mattered least. The problem is what happened when the drivers actually had to wrestle the car through a corner.

McLaren ran lower downforce — you can see it in the straights — but still turned better through the Lesmos. That's setup confidence. Ferrari either didn't trust their car in the high-speed stuff or couldn't get the tyres to work when it counted. Either way, they took the fastest Sector 1 of the session and finished two places behind a car they should have beaten.

At Baku next week, Sector 1 won't save them. The castle section is all about traction and braking stability — exactly where McLaren beat them here. Unless Ferrari figure out why they're losing half a second in the corners, they'll have the same problem on a completely different circuit.

You don't qualify fifth when you're fastest through the chicanes unless something is fundamentally wrong with how you're setting up the car. Ferrari need to stop optimizing for the straights and start trusting their drivers in the stuff that actually matters.
