Mercedes threw away a podium with a pit stop they didn't need

George Russell was half a second faster than the race winner — and finished third because someone on the pit wall panicked.

George Russell was faster than Lando Norris. Half a second faster over race distance, in fact. He finished 22 seconds behind him.

That doesn't happen by accident. That happens when a team with the quicker car makes a decision they can't defend.

Russell's second stint on hards lasted 24 laps. Norris ran the same compound for 39 laps — and was pulling away at the end.

Mercedes stopped Russell on lap 43. They didn't need to. The degradation data tells you everything: Russell's hards were losing 2.7 hundredths per lap. Norris, on the same compound, was losing one hundredth. That's not a tyre about to fall off a cliff — that's a tyre with 27 laps still to give.

And even if Mercedes didn't trust their own numbers, they could have looked at the car ahead. Norris pitted on lap 31, twelve laps after Russell. If the McLaren could run to the end from there, the Mercedes — with newer rubber and better degradation — had miles in hand.

The vertical drop on lap 43 is Russell's second stop. The gap goes from 9 seconds to 24 in one pit cycle — and never recovers.

Look at the gap trace. Russell led Norris by nine seconds when Mercedes brought him in. He came out 24 seconds behind and spent the rest of the race clawing back time on tyres that had no strategic advantage — because Norris was also on hards.

This wasn't an undercut. It wasn't a Safety Car gamble. It was a two-stop strategy at a circuit where track position is everything, executed against a one-stopper who was managing his pace perfectly. The only way that works is if the new tyres are so much faster that you can make up 15 seconds of pit delta in clean air. Russell's pace advantage over Norris? Half a second per lap. He needed 30 laps. He had 27.

Someone on the Mercedes pit wall saw Piastri stop on lap 45 and decided Russell needed to cover it. But Piastri was on a two-stop from the beginning — his first stint was 18 laps, Russell's was 19. Norris, meanwhile, had run 31 laps on the mediums before switching. That's a one-stop strategy, committed and executed.

Mercedes had the faster car. They had track position on Norris. They threw both away because they reacted to a strategy that wasn't aimed at them.

Zandvoort is next. It's another circuit where overtaking is nearly impossible and tyre management decides races. If Mercedes show up with this kind of form — and this kind of decision-making — they'll do it again.

The speed is there. The calm isn't.
