McLaren Handed Piastri the Slower Strategy and He Nearly Won Anyway

Piastri pitted on lap 18, thirteen laps before Norris. That early stop onto the hard tyre gave him track position through the middle stint — he led briefly from lap 40 — but it also committed him to a second stop on lap 45. Norris, meanwhile, stayed out until lap 31, took on hards, and ran to the flag.

The one-stop worked because Norris nursed his mediums with almost no degradation — just 0.024 seconds per lap — and then managed the hards to the end with virtually no falloff. The two-stop worked for Piastri in the sense that he was genuinely faster, but it didn't work in the sense that matters: he didn't win.

After that second stop, Piastri had twenty-five laps on fresh hard tyres to chase down Norris, who was managing his own hards to the end. He clawed back fourteen seconds. He ran qualifying laps in traffic. His fastest lap — a 79.4 on lap 56 — was half a second quicker than anything Norris posted all race.

It wasn't enough. Norris crossed the line seven-tenths clear, and the margin would have been wider if he'd needed to push. Piastri had the pace. He didn't have the strategy.

McLaren will say they split strategies to cover off Ferrari, or to give themselves two chances at the win, or some other line about maximizing team points. Fine. But Piastri was the faster car on Sunday, and the team gave him the strategy that required a miracle to win instead of the one that required Norris to make a mistake.

The two-stop works if you're hunting someone down from behind, not if you're starting second and have the pace to lead from the front. Someone needed to make that call before lap 18.

At Zandvoort, watch whether McLaren lets Piastri dictate his own strategy or whether they split again. Because if they have two cars this fast and keep deploying one of them as the hammer, they're going to hand away races they should win by two pit stops.
