Hamilton's Safety Car Jackpot Couldn't Save Ferrari's Strategy Mess

Lewis Hamilton gained eight positions on a perfectly timed VSC stop — then Ferrari gave it all back with a tyre gamble that made no sense.

Lewis Hamilton went from P12 on the grid to P4 at the flag — eight positions recovered, most of them courtesy of a VSC that deployed the exact lap he needed to pit. That's the luckiest break you'll get all season.

So why does it feel like Ferrari threw away a podium?

The VSC on Lap 29 was a gift. Hamilton had been running hards from the start — conservative, safe, slower than Verstappen's opening medium stint. When the VSC came out, Ferrari brought him in and the field shuffled. He emerged P4 without passing a single car on track.

Then they put him on mediums. In a race where the winner would run hards for 34 laps straight to the flag.

Verstappen made the opposite call: started on mediums, switched to hards under the same VSC, and managed those tyres all the way through two more safety car periods to the finish. Red Bull saw a race that would be managed, not fought. Ferrari saw... what, exactly?

The medium stint gave Hamilton nothing. Seventeen laps at an average of 80.4 seconds per lap — faster than his opening hard stint, yes, but not fast enough to attack anyone ahead. He wasn't closing on Piastri. He wasn't under pressure from behind. The mediums were pointless speed.

The gap to Verstappen collapses to near-zero around Lap 30 — that's the VSC compressing the field. From there, Hamilton couldn't hold it.

When the safety car came out on Lap 46, Ferrari had a choice: leave Hamilton out and protect track position, or react to what everyone else was doing. They reacted. Hamilton pitted for hards — his third stop of the race — and fell back into the pack.

Verstappen? Stayed out. He'd been on hards since Lap 30 and had 17 laps left to manage. Ferrari gave up P4 for fresh rubber Hamilton didn't need in a race that was about to finish under red flag anyway.

This wasn't bad luck. This was a team that had the fastest car through the VSC chaos and chose to optimise for a tyre offset that didn't matter. Hamilton's degradation on those final hards was catastrophic — minus 3.5 seconds per lap, the worst deg rate of the race — but it didn't cost him because the race ended under red flag.

He still finished P4. It should have been P3 at minimum. All Ferrari had to do was nothing.

Monaco is next. Street circuit, one-stop race, no VSC lottery to bail anyone out. If Ferrari can't figure out when to leave their driver alone, Hamilton's going to spend the whole weekend managing tyres he didn't need to be on.

Verstappen will be managing a victory.
