Verstappen lost pole in seven corners

Red Bull's fastest lap in qualifying came down to a single sector — and a 0.229-second deficit they couldn't make up anywhere else.

Max Verstappen set the fastest time through Sector 1. He set the fastest time through Sector 3. Oscar Piastri took pole by three hundredths of a second.

Verstappen's Lap 16 was 0.182 seconds faster through the first six corners. He carried that advantage to the apex of Tosa. Then the McLaren did whatever McLaren does through the technical section — Piratella, the climb to Acque Minerali, the descent back down — and by the time both cars reached Variante Alta, Piastri was nearly a quarter-second clear.

Verstappen clawed back 0.013 seconds through the Rivazza complex. It wasn't enough. Piastri's pole lap was 74.670. Verstappen's was 74.704. The margin was 0.034 seconds. The deficit in Sector 2 was 0.229 seconds. You can do the maths.

Red Bull will arrive in Monaco knowing they were faster at the start of the lap and faster at the end. They will also know that the seven corners between Tosa and Variante Alta are about as relevant to the Monaco layout as any seven corners on the calendar.

Piastri starts from pole. Verstappen starts alongside. The race that matters is the one nobody has data for yet.
